Spoken Interaction: Food/Leisure

Adapted from Chung Cheng High School (Main)’s 2018 MYE oral examination

Note: The picture depicts a character themed cafe (e.g. Hello Kitty cafe)

How would you feel about going inside one of these cafes?/ Would you go to such a cafe?
(You could fall back on the 5 positive adjectives I taught you for Q1. Additionally, think of any drawbacks of such cafes.)

Enjoyable

Talk about the novelty factor of going to such cafes. The decorations, utensils, crockery and even food at such cafes often come with the image of the characters.
PE: Have you gone to such a place before? If no, what sort of themed cafe might you be interested in visiting? (Consider your interests: favourite sports team, favourite musician/band, favourite movie)
What might people do when they visit such cafes? Take pictures/videos and share them on their social media accounts.

Too childish
Such cafes are more likely to appeal to children because they feature cartoon characters.
PE: Talk about a child you know who would enjoy visiting such a place. OR
Talk about how most of the people you see patronising such cafes are often families with small children.

Expensive/not good value for money
The food at these cafes are usually more expensive because using these characters’ images usually involves trademark costs.
PE: If you or someone you know has visited such a place, talk about how much was spent. Then compare the character themed cafe to another place that is more affordable and has better food.

What are your views on studying with friends?

Positive peer pressure
Would feel motivated to study when seeing one’s friends studying.
PE: Have you been in such a situation? Talk about it.

Able to help one another
When studying together, friends can help one another.
PE: Is there a subject that you’re particularly weak at? Which friends do you seek help from? Or is there a subject that you’re especially strong at? Do your friends seek help from you for this subject?

May be distracted
Might end up chatting with one another and not focussing on studies. Some people also need absolute silence in order to concentrate properly. Do you know such people? Are you one of them?

Might be costly
In order to find a space to study as a group, students usually patronise cafes like Starbucks or fast food outlets. To be allowed to study at these areas, students have to spend money buying food and drinks sold there. This might be costly for students who are still reliant on their parents for pocket money.
PE: How much do you spend on average when you study at these places with your friends? Do you think your money could be put to better use?
